Some like it HOT. Does your car like it COLD?
What can I say, so far so good. Mother Nature has been good and hey, I will be the last one to complain. But as a colleague of mine says, “Mother Nature always gets paid.” It’s a matter of time.
Since cars and the cold don’t mix very well, here is a reminder of simple and effective ways to winterize your vehicle and work with Mother Nature as best as possible. It’s a win-win all around. Your pocket will thank you too.
Here goes:
- Check your battery, belts, hoses, heater/defroster, wipers, hoses, oils, brakes, lights etc. In the winter, the cranking power your battery gives out is greatly reduced and if your wiper blades are brittle or worn it will be hard for you to see.
- This is bear repeating. Invest in winter tires. All season tires DO NOT perform like winter tires. Winter tires have added groove capacity so you get extra traction. To maintain optimum traction handling and stability four (4) winter tires are recommended on all vehicles.
- Keep your tires properly inflated; check them at least once a month. Anything over or under the recommended pressure is undesirable. If your tires are low in pressure you will be wearing out your tire and using more fuel. If your tires are over inflated you reduce traction on your tires which can be dangerous on icy roads.
- Keep adequate washer fluid, an ice scraper, snow brush, an emergency kit, warm blanket, food and a tow truck number so you are prepared for whatever happens.
- Drive slowly, keep your distance and keep within the speed limit. Pace yourself so you avoid having to make a sudden stop. Ice and snow will always be a part of winter driving so drive sensibly.
Follow my tips and you’ll have a successful winter season.
